In Buhunda village, many women carry the full weight of household responsibilities—while facing unequal treatment and the threat of violence. One young mother shared her experience:

“Women here have so many responsibilities. We wake up early to fetch water, collect firewood, clean, and bathe the children. Meanwhile, men relax at the village center drinking tea and alcohol. When they have money, they gamble on football games. If they lose, they take things from our homes—bicycles, food—to pay debts. We can’t speak up unless we want to be beaten.”

This story reveals the deep imbalance in gender roles, where women’s labor is undervalued and their voices suppressed. TAHEA Mwanza works to challenge these norms through gender equality education, women’s empowerment programs, and community dialogues that promote respect and shared responsibility.
