TAHEA Mwanza has been implementing Early Childhood Development for many years and has been successful in increasing opportunities for early learning for thousands of children in the Mwanza region.
Recently, we came across a situation in one of the families in our target communities, which has led us to ask many questions, and one of the questions is what makes an intervention responsive.
Shija Lugiko is a woman aged 37 years who lives in Igumamoyo. She is married and has 7 children aged 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, and 12 years respectively.
She and the family are smallholder farmers, and that is the main source of their family’s livelihood. Their community is no longer rural, as many rural areas would look like; it is being influenced by people migrating from Mwanza city looking for building plots, and many community members are seeing it as an opportunity to get some income by selling their farming land, and this continues to affect the lives of many resource-poor families that we serve.
Shija’s family is not an exception. The child in the picture is malnourished. The case is known to the local government official, who has been following up to help save the boy’s health.
The child has taken a long time to recover from severe malnutrition. It looks like Shija is always under stress, and this is impacting her well-being.
She also has other children who are not very happy.
TAHEA Mwanza ECD program needs to be responsive to the needs of families, but how? We have an integrated approach to ECD where we have early learning, nutrition, health, responsive caregiving, security, and safety.
We are realizing that there are other influencing factors which are negatively impacting our program, we need to start conducting Challenges/ Barrier Analysis from time to time, or we have to look for Enablers and Limiters to our implemented programs going forward, A Lesson Learnt.
