March 14th, 2020, the Tanzanian Government announced the spread of an airborne disease that originated in other countries, particularly China. This airborne disease is called COVID-19 (Coronavirus December 2019). The highly spread of the disease made it categorized as a pandemic.
TAHEA Mwanza decided to work on the disease to fight the spread through certified worldwide measures. We decided to give education on the preventative measures to fight the disease and install tippy tap devices for hand washing, to the 1000 households in the two wards of Ilemela district, which are Bugogwa and Shibula wards.
We decided to install these devices since they are well-known for ending the spread of diseases. When a person washes her hands, there is no need to touch the device with her hands, but just her legs. In doing so, we were able to help poor families to fight the disease. The application of the device was contagious because other families imitated and decided to install tippy tap devices with their own resources. Some asked for help to install the device, and we did that while giving them other measures like social distancing. It was our responsibility to ensure we didn’t spread the virus through the activities we were doing.
In November 2020, we decided to go back and see if the devices were still being used or if families had stopped because the diseases didn’t show big effects. Upon going to the field, we met Mr. Maige, a man who is still using the device at his home around Mhonze street in Shibula ward.
He said ‘‘I am still using the device because it is helping me to be clean after I come back from my toilet. Before the tippy tap device, I used to only clean myself in the toilet, but now I am doing it twice. I clean the toilet, and I also come outside and clean the device.
Mr. Maige said the device has helped many people in the area since they had a belief that the device fights COVID-19. ‘‘These devices helped our children to be safe from this terrible disease, thank you for bringing us this amazing device”, he said
We at TAHEA Mwanza tasked ourselves to create awareness beyond the two wards, and we are proud that we have contributed to the reduction of the spread. We have also learnt that we should continue insisting on the use of tippy taps and other hands-free washing devices, so that we help to stop the spread of other diseases.
