TAHEA Mwanza Honors the Day of the African Child

Spread the love

TAHEA Mwanza proudly joins all Tanzanians and the global community in commemorating the Day of the African Child, which will be observed in the Mwanza Region on June 16, 2023, at Furahisha Grounds in Ilemela Municipality.

This annual observance traces its roots to a resolution passed by the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1990, in memory of the brave children of Soweto, South Africa, who were tragically killed on June 16, 1976 while protesting against apartheid and demanding their right to quality, non-discriminatory education.

Their courage sparked a continental commitment to uphold and protect the rights of African children. Since then, June 16 has been recognized as a day to reflect on the progress made—and the challenges that remain—in ensuring the well-being and empowerment of children across Africa.

📢 2023 Theme: “Pay Attention to Child Safety in the Digital World”

This year’s theme highlights the urgent need to safeguard children in an increasingly digital environment. It calls on governments, civil society, and communities to:

  • Develop robust strategies that protect children online
  • Equip parents, guardians, and educators with tools to guide responsible digital engagement
  • Address emerging risks such as cyberbullying, exploitation, and misinformation

🎯 A Moment for Reflection and Action

The Day of the African Child is not only a tribute—it is a rallying point for evaluating the implementation of national child development policies. It urges all stakeholders to:

  • Strengthen access to essential services such as health, education, and protection
  • Promote values and skills that empower children to thrive in society
  • Ensure that every child inherits a future rooted in dignity, opportunity, and national pride

TAHEA Mwanza reaffirms its commitment to championing child rights and development, and invites all citizens to stand together in building a safer, more inclusive world for every African child.
