The first five years of a child’s life is the most critical and usually determines the quality of their adulthood.
Good nutrition is a key pillar and strong predictor of future success and wellbeing.
Through our partnership with Better Way Foundation, we have worked with women groups as an important group in the community in improving nutrition for young children, they largely influence the practices in the family and the community, they also have local platforms where they can share knowledge and information, they are community Change Agents.
Mama Suzy is a busy mother of three children who lives in Igalagala Village which is a fishing community around Lake Victoria.
She was one of the women who were counseled by Mama Lutandula, a trained Woman Nutrition Coordinator who received Training of Trainers sessions from TAHEA Mwanza and has been cascading training to women groups in her village and the neighboring communities.
Mama Lutandula has not only received training on nutrition but also trained on other components including food hygiene, environmental health and other health-related topics which are supportive to the family wellbeing.
Before being educated by Mama Lutandula, Mama Suzy was not aware of the importance of serving a diverse selection of foods to her family.
Her daughter Kalunde could not play with other children, most of the time she was sick. Luckily, other women in her community noticed and told the woman coordinator who supported Mama Suzy through a number of home visits to address the nutrition knowledge gap.
Mama Lutandula taught her on how to prepare balanced meals, preparation of home-made fortified flour for children, also explained her on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding of her young child, attending post-natal clinic and the importance of play and communication to children with ages birth to three.
Kalunde is now doing well since she started eating healthy diet and she plays at home and also joins other children in play.
“When Mama Lutandula advised me on the importance of proper nutrition, I realized that I should cook and feed my family with all types of foods available in our village but following the food groups,” she said.
“I also learned that I should have a proper feeding schedule for my children, above all, I learned that hygiene is directly linked to the health of my family members, and if we keep our environment clean and wash our hands properly after using the toilet and before cooking the meal and feeding the children, then we would be able to stay healthy” she concluded.
