In Buhunda village, farming demands often force families to rely on older siblings for childcare—delaying education and placing heavy responsibilities on young children. One elder shared a common practice:

“We go to the farm, and it’s far. So older siblings care for the younger ones. We prepare porridge, and a five-year-old might feed a two-year-old. That child doesn’t go to school until age seven. Most households do this—it’s normal here.”

This story reveals how economic survival strategies can unintentionally compromise early childhood development and education. TAHEA Mwanza works to shift this norm through community education, early childhood care programs, and advocacy for timely school enrollment.
