Fathers can influence early child development in various ways such as fathers’ parenting behaviors, couples’ relationship dynamics and fathers’ mental health. Gender norms and culture shape fatherhood in ways that are different from motherhood in such ways as unique expectations about childcare responsibilities, time use patterns and stressors. Caregiving interventions that support fathers have potential to improve child development and family wellbeing more broadly.
This is a research project which TAHEA Mwanza is collaborating with Emory University from the US starting 2022. The project started by collecting evidence reviews through systematic literature reviews and curricula of male engagement programs and specifically in sub-Saharan Africa. Then qualitative formative research was conducted to identify current practices, barriers, and enablers and other secondary analysis and papers and later compilation and adaptation of draft intervention content in 2023.
Goal: To design a multicomponent fatherhood parenting program to improve ECD in Mwanza, Tanzania
The Familia Bora Project is now at the stage of Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) being implemented in Misungwi and Sengerema districts of Mwanza Region in collaboration with PI Joshua Jeong and other Researchers at Emory University.
