“Ending hunger and ensuring food security through improved Cassava Variety in Buchosa District”.
TAHEA Mwanza objective in Agriculture Program is to promote and increase the adoption of climate resilient crops through improved seed, access to organic inputs, affordable finance and access to markets among Smallholder Farmers. In addition to that our Adequate housing program is to increase access to Inclusive livelihoods and adequate housing for Women and Young People where right to food is one of the project items.
A rural livelihood is defined as: “the capabilities, assets and activities that rural people require for a means of living.” It is considered sustainable “when it can cope with and recover from stresses and shocks, and maintain or enhance its capabilities and assets–both now and in the future. People are “food secure” when they have access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs for an active and healthy life
TAHEA Mwanza’s efforts in providing clean planting materials, promoting crop diversity, and addressing diseases affecting productivity contribute significantly to achieving the right to food and improving food security in the target districts. These interventions not only address immediate food shortages but also contribute to building resilient and sustainable agricultural practices among project beneficiaries.
TAHEA Mwanza purchased and distributed cassava planting materials (cuttings) to 26 group members (who are also saving for housing improvement), with a focus on addressing diseases affecting crop productivity. Project beneficiaries, in Buchosa district, received 4,000 cassava cuttings which can be planted on 12 acres of land, contributing to crop diversity and resilience against diseases.
“Both Men and Women from (26 groups members) received the clean cassava cuttings for their farms”.
TAHEA Mwanza collaboration with beneficiaries in the management and harvesting of cassava planting materials, promoted the use of a clean and healthy variety (TARICAS 4).
Anticipated harvesting of 2,750 cassava cuttings per household of the participating member, offering a clean and high-yielding variety to replace less productive varieties.
Ongoing monitoring and evaluation will ensure the continued success and impact of the initiative which include
1) Promotion of crop diversification by providing disease-resistant and high-yielding varieties, reducing dependence on cereals and improving resilience
2) Enhanced crop diversity, with beneficiaries gaining access to alternative and nutritious food sources. TARICAS 4 variety can yield a total of 40 – 60 tons of cassava harvested in piecemeal over a 3 years period.
The first year (up to 9 Months, the cassava can be harvested for cooking as fresh sweet variety, after one year the harvested cassava is for flour processing)
