ADEQUATE HOUSING.

“It is possible for a resource-poor person to own a house incrementally by participating in microfinance
groups whose cooperative purpose is saving and lending for housing”

TAHEA Mwanza started micro finance activities in 2000 as a synergy to agricultural activities in Ukerewe and Sengerema district, operating as VSLAs to support Orange Sweet Potatoes for food, nutrition, and food security, and income generating for poor households.

After the successful synergy, TAHEA Mwanza decided to replicate the program synergy in establishing Pre-primary schools in Ilemela and Nyamagana district during promotion of Early Childhood Education, again the program synergy was very successful, the program was meant to empower rural families economically to enable the provision of quality care for the young children in families as well as contributing towards early childhood care and education services through their respective groups.

Community Managed Microfinance (CMMF) entails promotion of an integrated and holistic approach to microfinance that reaches the very poor, needy, and Marginalized communities that cannot access appropriate financial services through conventional banking.

After 14 years of experience in promoting the Community Managed Micro Finance program in 5 districts of the Mwanza region, TAHEA Mwanza started implementing the Adequate Housing project.

As witnessed before, the microfinance component was a facilitator for community members to construct their houses through group saving and lending activities, where loans were taken to start small businesses, this approach enabled members to build good houses, and this was successfully done in communities where small businesses flourished, and unfortunately, the remote areas where people depended on small holding farming it was a big hurdle.

The rural settings led to an innovation called “Saving and lending for housing,” and they further agreed that the annual share-out will be shared in-kind (housing building materials and not cash).

The innovation has led to a successful building of the members’ houses without having stress on whether their community placement is a disadvantage to build and own a good housing for the family.

Shelter is one of the most basic and fundamental human needs. It provides protection and safety against the elements, ensuring the well-being of individuals and communities. In the face of harsh conditions, extreme temperatures, or potential threats, having a reliable Shelter you can trust is essential.

“I never thought that one day I will feel very proud of myself in our village, building a good house was a dream, now my family owns a good house, we have even elected a rain water harvesting tank which enables the family to have access to clean water, this has resulted from being a member in a group where members save for housing construction”, said a member of Nyafula Village – Ilemela District, Mwanza, Tanzania.
