Laurencia Lubigisa is a woman residing at Kabangaja Street in Ilemela District. She is a Nutrition Coordinator for a women’s group.

In 2014, TAHEA, in partnership with Tanzania Food and Nutrition Centre (TFNC), trained women coordinators in nutrition and Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF); Laurencia was one of them. She started coordinating a group of 30 women focusing on nutrition education.

In order for the group members to be able to support adequate nutrition of their children, they needed to improve their households’ income. Hence, she organized the group to start saving and lending activities as a microfinance group in 2015.

TAHEA trained her again on coordinating microfinance activities for the group, and today she is supporting 26 group members on nutrition education and community-managed microfinance.

“I am happy that most of the group members are using the money they get from savings to buy nutritious food for themselves during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and for their young children after 6 months. I have trained them on many things, including how to make a balanced diet”, she says.

Laurencia has gone beyond just improving nutrition supplements for families, but also created an income-generating activity from selling nutrition products.

“I make fortified flour with a mixture of Soya, millet, and sorghum, the flour which can be used to make porridge, milk, burns, and ugali. I do packaging and sell it for income-generating,” she added.

Because of this initiative, she was able to secure customers for buying fortified flour from other Districts like Sengerema, Misungwi, and Nyamagana.

Laurencia is proud that her work is contributing to reducing malnutrition in children on Kabangaja Street and improving her family’s income.
